2014 WALT Sierra Mar Pinot Noir
"Sultry aromas of black plum, violet, lava rocks, smoke, caramelized beef, forest floor and star anise draw the nose into this hearty, well-rounded wine. There is both vibrant energy and tannic grip to the palate, with dense, dark cranberry, tangy fruit skins, a touch of vanilla and a minty fennel element on the finish."
94 Points | Wine Spectator, James Laube
"Though ultrarich and loaded with deep, dark flavors, this maintains a graceful balance and delicate presence, with detailed blackberry, raspberry, mocha, black licorice, smoke, nutmeg and cedar notes, ending with a long, persistent aftertaste that keeps reverberating."
94 Points | The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker
"A big, rich, full-bodied and downright sexy Pinot Noir is the 2014 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard. Giving up lots of ripe dark fruits, scorched earth, chocolate and even a touch of licorice, it hits the palate with terrific concentration, no hard edges and a great finish. Aged ten months in 55% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, drink it anytime over the coming 7-8 years."
Deep garnet in color, Sierra Mar showcases spiced oak laced with cedar, pepper, fenugreek and ripe pomegranate on the nose. The palate is very dense with flavors of ripe red fruit accented by bergamot, crushed granite and savory notes. The finish is powerful and dense - this wine transforms with time in the glass.
Sierra Mar vineyard is owned by Gary and Rosella Franscioni, famed pioneers of the Santa Lucia Highlands. This incredible vineyard site reflects the best of the appellation. The vineyard produces rich, lush, unctuous fruit that is balanced by the natural acidity of the site.
|Varietal Composition||100% Pinot Noir|
|Barrel Aging||10 months, 55% New Francois Freres|
|Appellation||Santa Lucia Highlands|
|Vintage Notes||2014 had a very early bloom and bud break driven by drought conditions and warm weather. This allowed the fruit to slowly ripen and to be harvested at the most optimal time. Very small berries (high skin to juice ratio) gave our wines a deep concentration and richness.|
