2017 HALL Bergfeld Cabernet Sauvignon
Critic Review
"The Bergfeld is almost entirely sourced from their Saint Helena property which is set on an ancient river bed with well-drained soils. Right away the beautiful floral character on the nose impresses, with blackberry compote, black licorice and shades of anise aromatics that all come together in the glass. The palate is seamless with a soft texture, as this dense yet elegant wine shows gorgeous layers of blackberry pie, mocha, anise and creme de cassis with a great acid backbone. This boasts outstanding length and tension, with a light dusting of sanity. Outstanding to savor in its youth, this beautiful new Cabernet Sauvignon will cellar well for decades to come. "

"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Bergfeld is made from 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it delivers scents of Black Forest cake, crème de cassis and blueberry pie with suggestions of aniseed, clove oil, Chinese five spice and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied, the richly fruited palate has a solid backbone of grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and spicy. Well-rendered for the vintage, this lets exotic plum, açaí berry and loganberry fruit splay out, maintaining focus on the anise- and apple wood-tinged finish."

Bergfeld St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon has enticing aromas of blackberry pie, vanilla, créme de cassis, and clove with savory undertones of worn leather and herbs de provence. Medium garnet in color, this wine’s dense and powerful tannins are balanced by a lush brightness and dark concentrated berries. A core of sweet oak on the mid-palate leads into a long and structured mouth-coating finish.

Vintage Notes | Our 2017 harvest wrapped up early fall following summer heat spurts and a growing season that saw significant rain throughout the state, ending a five-year drought. The season began with rainfall that refilled reservoirs and replenished soils. Harvest began early at a normal pace, and then progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled mid-September, slowing the harvest pace and allowing grapes to ripen gradually. This is a strong quality vintage. |
