Owen Bargreen
"This is named after the first year that grapes were planted on their estate in St. Helena. Sourced from roughly twenty vineyards throughout the valley. Espresso bean tones combine with chocolate covered cherry and creme de cassis on the nose. The palate is seamless with great acidity with layers of blue and dark fruits that mingle with chocolate, tobacco leaf and graphite tones. With moderate tannins and a great sense of length, this beautiful wine will cellar well over the next two decades."

"Structured in firm, burly tannin, this dark and brooding wine has a lift of red fruit in the form of cassis and plum. Crushed rock, turned earth and tobacco leaf give it varietal character and complexity around full-bodied concentration and richness."

Dark garnet in color, the wine opens with powerful aromas of ripe blackberry, wet stone, and intense, yet integrated oak. The palate is loaded with Sacrashe driven tannin and concentrated blackberry notes. Spicy oak notes of nutmeg, cocoa nib, and clove add another layer of complexity. The finish is lengthy and full of dark, balanced, and dense tannin. Another great vintage of Eighteen Seventy-Three!

IN 1873, CAPTAIN WILLIAM PETERSON came to Napa and established a pioneering winery on our St. Helena property. Throughout the 1930’s and 40’s, the site grew to become Napa’s most important winery, producing nearly 40% of its entire vintage. The fruit for our “Eighteen Seventy-Three” hails from the rugged mountain slopes that frame Napa Valley. Power and individuality underscore this wine, a deliberate intent to commemorate the trailblazing spirit of Napa’s first vintners.

Vintage NotesOur 2017 harvest wrapped up early fall following summer heat spurts and a growing season that saw significant rain throughout the state, ending a five-year drought. The season began with rainfall that refilled reservoirs and replenished soils. Harvest began early ata normal pace, and then progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled in mid-September, slowing the harvest pace and allowing grapes to ripen gradually. This is a strong quality vintage.
