St. Helena, Napa Valley

The St. Helena vineyards surrounding the winery serve as the primary source of grapes for the Bergfeld wine and showcase remarkable consistency from vintage to vintage. This part of St. Helena was among the earliest areas to cultivate grapes in Napa Valley, historically referred to as ‘Vineland.’

St. Helena is renowned for being one of the warmer appellations in Napa Valley, benefitting from its distance from the marine effects of the San Pablo Bay. Wines from the St. Helena appellation often exude decadence and power due to the warmer temperatures and deep alluvial soils. Notably, the most captivating wines from the appellation stem from well-drained sites.

TOur St. Helena vineyard, first planted in 1873, lies along the western benchland of the St. Helena appellation, celebrated for its more refined expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon. Interestingly, the vineyard occupies the former location of Sulphur Creek, now running just south of the city of St. Helena. Consequently, the vines are now planted in an ancient creek bed marked by nutritional challenges, abundant rock and gravel, and exceptional drainage.

Our St. Helena wines are captivated by the essence of blackberry compote that defines this wine every year. The profound depth of black fruit aromas, intertwined with violet and lilac, forms the core of this wine’s aromatic profile. The palate is velvety, round, and powerful, with notes of cocoa, black fruit compote, and dried herbs. The finish maintains a plush texture but concludes with a cascade of refined tannin and structure that promises enduring cellaring.
